Getting your lawn Winter ready!
Now that winter is coming and we are getting more rain, this is a great time to give your lawn a little bit of loving care to take it through to spring.
The first thing we can do is start to get your moss under control. Two ways of doing this: spread moss killer across the lawn, in two weeks remove by vigorously raking surface or try a popular product we have here in the Pavilion called MO BACTER, which takes an indirect action against moss, reduces chances of reinfection and eliminate the need to scarify (rake) out the moss because qualities in the product turn the dead moss into food for healthy lawns. Figure out why the moss is forming – too much shade – can you remove lower branches for more light, or do you need to improve drainage?
To improve drainage in heavy traffic areas, a garden fork can be pushed into the ground as far as you can, wiggle it around and repeat every four or so inches in the area then brush a sandy top dressing across, filling the holes, allowing water and air into the lawn. For larger lawns, hand and powered aerating machines can be hired.
If you did not use the MO BACTER which feeds your lawn for up to 100 days, finish off with a feed using a fertiliser high in phosphates and potash for strong roots that are ready in spring. Be sure when doing this that you have had good rainfall and grass is actively growing before doing these jobs.
When closer to winter remember to rake (on dry days) lawn and thick layers of fallen leaves to ensure ventilation and keep strong growth. Keep off frosted lawns to avoid damage.
It is a good idea to mow the lawn short for wet climates. Usually, people like to mow two times in October and once in November but it might be a better idea to just drop the blade height a notch and keep mowing once a week until grass it ¾ inch tall to prevent dead grass building up and smothering new growth in spring.
I’m hoping there are a few more BBQ days ahead this month but if not, the fruits of these easy jobs will be enjoyed next year!
