Plant of the Month - Erysimum 'Bowles's Mauve'
One of our all time favourites, this plant is a must-have for every garden. Erysimum 'Bowles's Mauve' or the perennial wallflower will reward you with flowers for about six months of the year. Bowles's mauve is a bushy, evergreen which grows to about 18 inches with narrow, dark grey leaves and beautiful deep mauve and lavender fragrant flowers on top.

It is a very non-demanding plant, it enjoys full sun and well-drained soil. Keep dead heading the flowers to prolong flowering. It is best to think of the Erysimum as a short-lived perennial. Plants look really good for about 3 years but should then be replaced. A very hard winter can also kill them. Its' beautiful flowers look ideal in a mixed border and are ideal for creating the 'cottage' effect. They are also suitable for growing by the sea where is is the sometimes hard to find really prolific flowering plants. Other varieties to try include Erysimum Paint Box, Apricot Twist and Sweet Sorbet.
