What’s in your Trolley? Wonderful Summer produce awaits!
It’s a wonderful time of year for escaping to faraway places, experiencing new cultures and foods. But it’s also a fantastic time of year to eat freshly grown produce. If you are not an avid gardener or don’t have an allotment, do you know what you should expect to see in the fruit and vegetable section of your supermarket this time of the year? Well the choice and variety for fruits, vegetables and herbs are in abundance!
Here are some but not all of what you can expect in your shopping trolley in August! It’s time to make the most of the summer salads and deliciously simple homemade desserts before the twilight of autumn sets in.
Vegetables
There is still plenty of time to enjoy light summer dinners such as stir-fries and barbecues and vegetables for both are ready to harvest now. These include Aubergines, Beetroot, Broccoli, Cabbage and Rhubarb. Yum! Here's a delicious recipe for BBQ Jerk Chicken with Mango Salsa.
Fruits
It’s berry season! Berries are very versatile but mostly used for desserts. They are also fantastic for a kick start in the morning as a smoothie! Salads
Summer salads are great for summer garden parties and light lunches. There is plenty of fresh produce to choose from to create a colourful, healthy summer salad. Look out for Lettuce, Peppers, Cucumbers and Tomatoes while they are at their best. This Tomato and Basil Saladlooks delicious!
Herbs
Herbs are a wonderful edition to any garden and to any kitchen! They add natural flavour to foods. If they are grown at home they can be easily frozen in ice cub trays to use in cooking over the winter months too. Basil, Chives, Parsley and Mint are among our favourites.
